When the ocean runs higher than predicted, add that to the tide table. A 6.5 ft tide with +18 in of surge reaches 8 ft.

0.83 in

◆ Max chance 90%

NWS San Diego gridded forecast. 1 in+ can pond low streets and the Back Bay; rain at high tide is worst because drains are closed by tide valves.

Neighborhoods most at risk

Balboa Island ▲ Highest risk
Highest risk in the city. Water overtops low seawall sections on the South and North Bay Fronts and backs up through storm drains at king tides of 6.5 ft and up. Move cars off the Bay Front and Park Ave and sandbag doors.
Balboa Peninsula ◆ High risk
Bay-side streets from 15th St to the Fun Zone and the Balboa Blvd low points flood at king tides; ocean side relies on the winter sand berms. Stay off the berms.
Lido Isle ◆ High risk
Low bulkheads and street ends on the harbor side can overtop at king tides; Via Lido and Lido Village streets pond in heavy rain.
West Newport ◆ High risk
Newport Shores and the Santa Ana River mouth area are low-lying; watch heavy rain plus high tides, and big south swells pushing over the berms near the river jetties.
Dover Shores ◆ Some risk
Bayshores and the Upper Bay edge can see minor tidal flooding at extreme high tides.
Corona del Mar ◆ Some risk
Mostly bluff-top; flooding is limited to the harbor entrance and China Cove area at extreme tides.

FAQ

When are the king tides in Newport Beach?
King tides are the highest tides of the year, usually November through January around new and full moons. This page lists every predicted high tide of 6.5 ft MLLW or more in the next 30 days from NOAA station 9410580.
Does Balboa Island flood?
Yes. Balboa Island is the lowest part of Newport Beach. At tides around 6.5–7 ft, especially with storm surge or El Niño ocean levels, water can overtop low seawall sections and back up through storm drains onto the Bay Front and nearby streets.
Where can I get sandbags in Newport Beach?
Prefilled sandbags: City Corporation Yard (592 Superior Ave.), Marina Park (1600 W. Balboa Blvd.) and the temporary Fire Station No. 1 near Balboa Pier. Empty bags are at fire stations and Lifeguard HQ. Call 949-644-3055 to confirm.
What is a coastal flood warning?
The National Weather Service issues a Coastal Flood Advisory when minor tidal flooding of low areas is expected and a Coastal Flood Warning when flooding that threatens property or roads is expected. Sign up for free email alerts to get them for your neighborhood.
Is it safe to walk in floodwater?
No. Tidal and storm floodwater can carry sewage and hide holes, debris and manhole openings. Do not drive through flooded streets.
