If you are caught in a rip current

Stay calm and don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, then swim back at an angle. If you can’t escape, float and wave for a lifeguard. Always swim near a staffed Newport Beach lifeguard tower.

FAQ

What does a moderate rip current risk mean?
The NWS says life-threatening rip currents are possible. With a high risk they are likely, and you should stay out of the water unless a lifeguard says otherwise.
